Demetrius is an Athenian man. Egeus, Hermia's father, favors him and he seems like the perfect gentleman. Theseus, the Duke of Athens, who's the one to decree that Hermia must marry Demetrius, says, ''Demetrius is a worthy gentleman.'' For some reason, he has been able to pull the wool over Theseus' and Egeus' eyes and appear as the perfect gentleman. Lysander, understandably, does not like Demetrius at all. The wool has not been pulled over his eyes, and he insists that Demetrius is a ''spotted and inconstant man.''

Helena is a school friend of Hermia, the female lead in the play. Hermia loves Lysander, but her father, Egeus, has ordered her to marry Demetrius. To complicate things, Helena is in love with Demetrius, even though he does not return her feelings. Helena is as pretty as Hermia and taller (which seems to matter to both girls), but she feels like Demetrius is blind to her good qualities and looks only at Hermia.

At one point in the past (the play is rather vague on this point), Demetrius was a suitor of Helena. We don't know the extent of their relationship; even though Lysander claims he ''made love'' to Helena and won her soul, which could be a form of flirting or physical act. (He later mentions Helena's virginity, so you'd be safe to guess the latter.) But after making arrangements with Egeus to marry his daughter Hermia, Demetrius rejects Helena and woos Hermia.

Demetrius is pretty nasty to Helena when she follows him to the forest. He tells her that it makes him ''sick'' to look at her face, and that he hopes ''wild beasts'' attack her while she's in the forest. It isn't until he comes up against Puck's magic that things change for this unhappy pair.

Oberon, king of the fairies, is in the woods with Puck, Oberon's servant. Oberon happens to overhear the exchange between Helena and Demetrius and decides to help. He orders Puck to put love-drops into Demetrius' eyes and make him fall in love with Helena.

Does Demetrius' and Helena's relationship have a happy ending? Well, sort of. Demetrius is in love with Helena, who's thrilled at the turn of events and doesn't really question why his regard for her has changed. Demetrius says only that his love for Hermia has faded and he now loves Helena. The pair are married in a triple wedding with Hermia and Lysander and the Duke of Athens and his bride. Demetrius and Helena end up happy, with one caveat: Demetrius' feelings are the result of a spell rather than true love.

Let's review. In William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Helena loves Demetrius, but he doesn't love her back. In fact, he almost seems to hate her. Even though Helena tells Demetrius of Hermia's plan to elope with Lysander, hoping to win his love, it only cause him to treat her more rudely. Demetrius even tells Helena that he hopes she'll be attacked by wild beasts. It isn't until Oberon (king of the fairies) overhears an exchange between the two that things begin to change.

Scrolling through Google at 5 am searching for the meaning of my latest dream is a weekly occurrence for me—right down to finding meaning in the time displayed on my bedside clock when I first wake up.
